One of the major challenges to realizing offshore wind in the U.S. is the development of offshore transmission and interconnection to onshore substations. The availability and development of offshore wind’s associated transmission is a primary concern for investors and developers.
This webinar featured a presentation by TenneT’s Wilfried Breuer on Germany’s offshore transmission experience. TenneT is a transmission service operator in Germany and the Netherlands with significant experience connecting OSW energy and integrating it into the grid. Tennet has connected over 5,300 MW of OSW power and forecasts that it will provide over 10 GW of transmission capacity in the German North Sea by 2025.
This webinar also featured a presentation by Mark Kalpin, Partner at Holland & Knight LLP, about potential ownership structures & mechanisms for developing OSW transmission in the US, mechanisms for cost recovery, risk management, and the RTO interconnection process.
