Energy System Analysis and Technical Assistance

Clean Energy Group provides independent analysis and technical guidance and support to assess the feasibility of solar, energy storage, and other clean energy solutions to meet economic, resilience, sustainability, and socially focused energy goals and objectives.

Areas of expertise:

  • Technoeconomic feasibility assessments and development support for community resilience hubs powered by onsite solar and energy storage, including community centers, affordable housing, medical facilities, faith-based institutions, and government buildings
  • Power plant replacement with clean alternatives, including renewables, energy storage, demand response, and VPPs
  • Evaluation of proposals for hydrogen production and use

Experience:

  • Provided technical support to more than 200 community-serving organizations for resilient solar and energy storage projects at 400 facilities across 33 states and territories.
  • Supported the development of over 100 solar and energy storage installations at community-serving facilities.
  • Conducted multiple gas power plant alternatives studies assessing the financial and grid reliability impacts of alternative generation portfolios.
  • Provided hydrogen informational resources and guidance to state agencies and regulators to help them evaluate pending legislation and proposals in their regions.

Energy Policy and Program Design

Clean Energy Group assists with the design of policies, initiatives, and programs intended to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies, increase access to distributed energy resources, and disincentivize continued reliance on fossil fuel power generation.

Areas of expertise:

  • Energy storage (utility, commercial, residential)
  • Peak demand reduction, including virtual power plants (VPPs), demand response, and non-emitting alternatives to fossil peaker plants
  • Community resilience with solar and energy storage, including resilience hubs, multifamily housing, and medically vulnerable households
  • Best practices to help ensure equitable participation and benefits distribution among low-income and historically unserved communities

Experience:

  • Provided clean energy policy and program development support to numerous states.
  • Supported the development and implementation of the first battery-based VPPs in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont and advanced VPP models in collaboration with additional states and utilities across the country.
  • Supported the development of incentive, grant, and procurement programs providing hundreds of millions of dollars to accelerate the development of solar and energy storage projects.
  • Assisted multiple state agencies and dozens of municipalities in establishing and implementing solar and energy storage initiatives to advance community resilience hubs.

Community Outreach and Education

Clean Energy Group develops informational resources and directly engages with community members and organizations to build local knowledge and awareness about clean energy technologies and incentive programs.

Areas of expertise:

  • Energy storage, including economics, incentives, resilience benefits, development, and safety
  • Role of clean energy in emergency preparedness and response
  • Fossil fuel and alternative fuel impacts, including economic, environmental, and health impacts
  • Load growth and data centers

Experience:

  • Produced dozens of accessible, informational resources covering a broad range of topics related to energy storage, including basic solar and battery storage guidance, project development checklists, incentive explainers, battery storage safety fact sheets, and the health impacts of power outages.
  • Developed training videos and materials for solar and storage development and VPP courses.
  • Organized and hosted dozens of informational webinars.
  • Conducted outreach and engagement campaign to raise awareness of Connecticut’s energy storage incentive program and increase participation among multifamily affordable housing providers.
  • Collaborated with community-based organizations in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania to raise community awareness of the impacts of fossil fuel peaker plants and load growth related data center development.
