Nantucket Island Energy Storage: Batteries for Reducing Peak and Deferring Infrastructure Investment

October 9, 2020 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

This webinar featured a discussion on Nantucket’s new battery energy storage system installed last summer. Prior to the installation of the battery system, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) analyzed the rate- and market-based case for investing in a battery system to meet peak loads. Patrick Balducci from PNNL discussed its evaluation method and the battery lifecycle benefits, including delaying the installation of a third cable out to the island. David Bianco at National Grid covered the technical details of the project as well as discuss the storage system’s reliability aspects. Dr. Imre Gyuk from the U.S. Department of Energy introduced the business case for battery storage and highlight examples from storage systems across the U.S.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Imre Gyuk, Director, Energy Storage Research, U.S. Department of Energy
  • David Bianco, Principal Engineer, National Grid
  • Patrick Balducci, Chief Economist, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
  • Val Stori, Project Director, Clean Energy States Alliance (moderator)

This webinar was a presentation of the Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP). ESTAP is a federal-state funding and information sharing project that aims to accelerate the deployment of electrical energy storage technologies in the U.S. ESTAP is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity, managed by Sandia National Laboratories, and administered by the Clean Energy States Alliance.
