Tools to Tackle Affordability and Cost Allocation in Electricity Rate Design
November 6, 2025 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET
Retail electricity rates are the primary interface between customers and the grid; they determine how customers pay for electricity and guide investments to support grid operations. Yet the increasing complexity of rates makes it challenging for state energy offices, ratepayers, customer advocates, regulators, and others to evaluate affordability, fairness, and system impacts.
This Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) webinar will cover how the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is addressing rate challenges in the electricity industry and helping to make the grid of the future affordable. NREL models the impact of rates on customers and how different grid scenarios impact rates, tracks rate changes historically and today, and evaluates rates across important regulatory considerations.
Speakers include Joyce McLaren, Senior Energy Analyst at NREL’s Accelerated Deployment and Decision Support (ADDS) Center, and Brittany Speetles, Researcher at NREL’s ADDS Center. CESA Project Director Anna Ziai will moderate.
