Rocky Mountain Institute’s first solar+storage report, titled “The Economics of Grid Defection,” fueled speculation about the “utility death spiral” that could result if more and more people elected to disconnect from the grid. Now RMI has a new report, “The Economics of Load Defection,” that describes a more likely outcome: what will the grid look like when many customers remain connected, but can increasingly self-supply a large portion of their electricity? Clean Energy Group hosted a webinar discussion on this topic with the authors of RMI’s recent report.
