How is energy efficiency connected to community resilience? The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has been working to answer that question through their community resilience program. In a report released last year, ACEEE found that energy efficiency strengthens energy systems and the communities they serve by providing more reliable and affordable energy. Energy efficiency reduces a community’s vulnerability to an array of hazards and increases their capacity to cope when disruptions occur.
Last month, ACEEE announced a new technical assistance opportunity to help communities incorporate efficiency into their resiliency planning efforts. ACEEE is offering assistance to a small number of communities by answering questions like: how should my community incorporate energy efficiency into its planning activities, or what types of energy efficiency should my community consider? Clean Energy Group’s Resilient Power Project will provide additional assistance to communities interested in improving resiliency through solar and energy storage technologies. The Public Technology Institute is also partnering on the effort.
In this webinar, ACEEE’s David Ribeiro gave an overview of efficiency as a resiliency measure and their new technical assistance offering. Clean Energy Group’s Seth Mullendore also discussed how efficiency can complement resilient solar+storage system design.
